“We are not just a brewery, we are a project.”
From day one, this brewery has invited its community to participate in their ‘playground’. This playground is not just about trying out new flavours, but above all about daring to step outside your comfort zone and experimenting with ideas that matter. In 2015, they launched Babylone, the very first beer brewed with recycled bread. This made them pioneers in circular brewing. Today, they are proud that this example has been followed, with similar initiatives in Belgium, the United Kingdom, France and beyond.
This circular approach has since been further developed in many other creative brews. Think of Tough Cookie, made with broken speculoos from the Dandoy biscuit factory, Slow Mo – a beer based on local organic beets and pears – and Yeti Bang, brewed with apples harvested in private gardens across Belgium.
What do they do well? They are strongly committed to sustainability. From using green energy to actively working with local farmers and producers. They resolutely opt for long-term relationships with Belgian and European suppliers, focus on local regenerative agriculture and consciously limit their distribution to within Europe. In this way, they try to grow every day, without sacrificing quality.
What can be improved? One thing is certain: their CO₂ emissions are still too high. For the second year in a row, they have mapped out their entire ecological footprint, including all direct and indirect emissions, down to the breadth of their supply chain. They realize that it is time for action. That is why they are committed to reducing their total CO₂ emissions by at least 10% annually. In doing so, they focus on energy consumption, optimizing the production process and further focusing on local raw materials.
Their story is far from perfect, but it is real. A quest full of enthusiasm, trial and error - but with one clear direction: meaningful brewing, with an eye for people, planet and the future.
