The Family Story Behind Brasserie des Fagnes
Brasserie des Fagnes is located in Mariembourg, a district of Couvin, just 20 minutes from Chimay. The story of the Adant family shows that southern Belgium is fertile ground for brewers.
In the 1920s, Victor Adant and Constant Lauvaux were brewers in Leval-Trahegnies (in the province of Hainaut) and Couvin, respectively. After World War II, the rise of large international breweries caused many small businesses to disappear. Brasserie Adant closed down, and Brasserie Lauvaux became a beverage wholesaler, led by Richard Adant and Fanny Lauvaux, the grandchildren of the two former brewers.
Their son Frédéric, however, was determined to revive traditional brewing in the spirit of his great-grandfathers. At the end of his studies, in 1994, he launched the beer Super des Fagnes. It became a popular beer in the Mariembourg region. The comeback was such a success that Frédéric opened his own Brasserie des Fagnes in 1998. The name refers to the Fagnes, the moorland region in the southern Namur Ardennes where the brewery is located.
Fagnes: More Than Just Beer
In addition to the brewery, Frédéric and his wife Christel also started a wholesale business for hospitality products in 2004, called Comptoir des Fagnes. And the story remains family-based: Christel’s grandfather was also a brewer for decades and owned his own Brasserie Fooz in Nismes, a neighboring village of Couvin.
Every year, around 140,000 visitors take a behind-the-scenes tour at Brasserie des Fagnes. The guided tour takes you through the former Degauquier brewery from Chimay (now part of the museum), then to the tasting room, and finally to the modern brewery in operation. Thanks to an ingenious system, you can sample brews directly from the tanks. Brasserie des Fagnes produces over 10,000 hectolitres of beer per year.
