The history of Corona pils
In 1922, businessman Braulio Iriarte — already successful in the wholesale trade of bread, flour, and yeast — founded Cervecería Modelo. Three years later, the Mexican president attended the grand opening of the brewery in Mexico City. From the start, the kettles produced Modelo, Negra Modelo, and Corona.
Don Braulio’s successors went on to acquire the Victoria, Estrella, and Pacífico breweries. By the mid-1950s, Modelo had become the largest brewery in the country. Thanks to a steadily growing market share, it held that position for decades. From the mid-1980s, exports to the United States began to rise. After Heineken, Corona became the most popular imported beer there. Since 1990, Corona has also been available in Belgium.
In July 2006, half of Modelo’s shares were acquired by the American company Anheuser-Busch, then the second-largest brewer in the world after InBev and SABMiller. Six years later, Anheuser-Busch merged with Belgian InBev to form brewery AB InBev, which took full ownership of Grupo Modelo. As a result, brands like Corona Extra, Corona Light, Negra Modelo, Modelo Especial, Modelo Light, and Pacífico became part of the brewing giant’s portfolio.
Corona and lime — an inseparable duo
Today, Corona is sold in more than 180 countries. All around the globe, people enjoy this refreshing pils with a slice of lime. This tradition likely originated from Mexico’s warm climate, where sweet, cold beer quickly attracts flies. The strong citrus aroma of a lime wedge in the neck of the bottle helps keep insects at bay.
