Brasserie Dubuisson

The brewery was founded in 1769 by Joseph Leroy under the name 'Brasserie de Ghysegnies' and was originally a farm with brewery and distillery. In 1890, Clovis Dubuisson married Aline Leroy, the fourth generation of the Leroy brewing family. Clovis became the head of the brewery and changed the name to Brasserie Dubuisson-Leroy. In 1926, his sons took over the farm brewery and the brewery is given its current name 'Brasserie Dubuisson Frères'.

In 1933, Alfred Dubuisson created a real Belgian tasting beer in the English style, which was very fashionable at the time. He named his beer BUSH BEER which is the English translation of BIERE DUBUISSON.

Bush has long been one of the strongest beers in the world.

In 2013, the brasserie Dubuisson started growing its own hops. A field of 50 hectares was created for this purpose and consists of approximately 880 hop plants on more than 150 masts.

In 2019, the 9th generation, Alexandre Dubuisson and Séverine Dubuisson, is working in the brewery.

Dubuisson Brewery has never stopped brewing in all the difficult times (French Revolution, First and Second World War) and is still in the same place.

The origins of the family-owned Brasserie Dubuisson

In 1769, Joseph Leroy started brewing beer on his farm under the name “Brasserie de Ghysegnies”. In 1890, his great-grandson Clovis married Aline Leroy, the great-granddaughter of the Leroy brewing family. In 1926, Clovis’ sons Alfred and Amédée changed the name Brasserie Dubuisson-Leroy to Brasserie Dubuisson Frères.

Until the early 20th century, the family mainly brewed beers for farm workers and local villagers. That changed in 1933, when the brothers launched a Belgian tasting beer in an English-inspired style. For the name “Bush”, they translated their own surname into English. For a long time it was among the strongest beers in the world, and after more than 90 years Bush is still brewed according to the same family recipe.

Brasserie Dubuisson in the 21st century

From the 1990s onwards, the range expanded with Bush de Noël, a Christmas & winter beer, and Bush Triple, a tripel. The year 2000 marked a turning point for Brasserie Dubuisson: the new beer Cuvée des Trolls became a national and international success.

The family business also opened microbreweries (Brasse-Temps) and taverns (Trolls & Bush) in several Walloon cities. Finally, Dubuisson was among the early adopters of ageing beer in oak barrels. This is how the infused beers Bush Prestige (2003), Bush de Nuits (2008) and Bush de Charmes (2014) came to life.

More beers, more Brasserie Dubuisson

The assortment keeps growing, with highlights such as Pêche Mel’Bush (2009), a peach-flavoured fruit beer, Rasta Trolls (2018), and Fram’Bush (2022), a raspberry fruit beer. In just a few years, brewing volumes doubled. In 2013, Dubuisson inaugurated a new brewhouse and its own hop field, with more than 850 plants across 50 hectares. That hop forms the base for Surfine, a seasonal beer.

In 2019, Brasserie Dubuisson celebrated its 250th anniversary with the 9th generation on board. Together with King Philippe, they inaugurated a brand-new visitor centre with a tavern, an interactive museum and a shop. Today, Dubuisson still brews its 100% natural beers in the same place, including these well-known Belgian beers:

  • Bush Caractère: the original Bush Beer, an amber-coloured beer at 12% ABV with notes of caramel and banana.
  • Surfine: a filtered, golden-blonde seasonal beer (top-fermented), bottle-conditioned, with fruity and floral aromas.
  • Cuvée des Trolls: a pale blond beer at 7% ABV with orange peel, available in 33 cl, 75 cl and 1.5 l bottles.
