Cantillon 50°N – 4°E, from 2017, belongs to the fourth batch of this exceptional lambic and represents a special moment in the evolution of this project. The name refers to the geographical coordinates of Brussels, 50°51′0″N 4°21′0″E, the location where the lambic spontaneously ferments at the Cantillon brewery. What makes this beer truly unique, however, is its maturation in spirits barrels, an idea that originally arose from the use of cognac barrels, but which over the years has allowed for variation and creativity.
For this fourth batch, brewed and aged in November 2014 and released in the spring of 2018, Armagnac barrels were chosen instead of cognac. This detail gives this particular beer a distinct character. While cognac is typically round and elegant, Armagnac brings a slightly more rustic, deeper, and spicier dimension. For approximately two years, the lambic was able to develop in these barrels, absorbing all the aromas from the wood, which was infused with the rich notes of the distillate.
The result is a complex, layered lambic in which Cantillon's characteristic fresh and lively acidity blends harmoniously with warm notes of prunes, raisins, and figs, complemented by subtle hints of vanilla, oak, and a light oxidative note. The wood influence is clearly present but never overpowering; it supports the wild fermentation and adds depth without obscuring the lambic's authentic character. On the palate, the beer is dry, powerful, and refined, with a long, elegant finish in which wood, fruity acidity, and soft brandy notes slowly fade.
50°N – 4°E from 2017 is therefore not a classic gueuze, but a contemplative beer that demands time and attention. It reflects Cantillon's vision of respecting tradition while simultaneously exploring boundaries. This fourth batch, matured in Armagnac casks, is considered a particularly expressive interpretation within the range: intense, characterful and at the same time remarkably balanced, a lambic that connects the soul of Brussels with the warm depths of south-west France.
