Franziskaner Brewery

The Franziskaner-Brauerei was founded in 1363, making it one of the oldest companies in the world. The company merged with the equally old Spatenbrau in 1922 and with Löwenbräu in 1996. Since 2003, they have been part of Anheuser-Busch InBev.

Brouwer Seidel Vaterstetter started the "Bräustatt bey den Franziskanern", a brewery in 1363 at a location diagonally opposite a Franciscan monastery. Franziskaner thus became the oldest civil brewery in Munich. Older breweries in Munich and Bavaria, such as the Augustiner-Bräu, were managed by monks.

The Franziskaner-Brauerei was moved to the Lilienberg in 1841.

The Weißbier, which is the beer par excellence to which Franziskaner is linked, only dates from 1964. That year, the Spaten-Franziskaner-Brauerei produced Weißbier for the first time, which was marketed as "Spaten Champagner Weissbier". In 1968, the crystal clear Weißbier was renamed “Club-Weiße”, and only in 1974 was it given the name “Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier”.
