Table beer

Table beer is a legally established name for types of beer that have a root content between 1 and 2 degrees Plato. This usually concerns bottom-fermented beer. The easiest way to make table beer is to dilute existing types of beer with water, but there are also table beers with their own taste and brand.

Due to the absence of clean drinking water, beer was often drunk with meals in the Middle Ages and for centuries afterwards. The brewing process killed germs present in the water. This beer had a low alcohol content and was also given to children.

Table beer, such as the Dutch 'old brown', had the reputation as late as the twentieth century that it was beneficial for the production of breast milk.
