Boon Oude Geuze Vat 86 is a 5,000 litre oak barrel, built in 1935 as part of a series of two. Specially designed for the ends of the barrel room, its short staves and wide ends earned it the nickname "tamboerke" (little tambourine). In 2016, the front and back bottoms were replaced with new French oak, resulting in this unique barrel now consisting of a combination of old wood with its established lambic microflora and new wood that adds fresh aromas.

The first brew after this renewal, dated April 28, 2016, matured for 2 years and 7 months in foeder No. 86. For the blending of Oude Geuze VAT 86, 90% of this lambic was blended with 10% young lambic. After bottling on November 29, 2018, and aging in the bottle for over a year, VAT 86 presents itself as a full-bodied, perfectly balanced Oude Geuze with an attenuation of 94%. Not extremely dry, yet powerful and rich in flavor.

The new oak gave the lambic distinctive aromas: wood caramel, reminiscent of fine cognac, and smoky vanilla notes reminiscent of whisky. Oak aging enhanced the body without becoming astringent, while the wild yeasts added additional layers: notes of peach and tropical fruit that refine and round out the whole.
