Brasserie De Chimay
The history of the Chimay Brewery dates back to 1850. The parish priest of Virelles, the abbot Jean-Baptiste Jourdin and the Prince of Chimay, Joseph de Riquet de Caraman, commissioned a dozen monks from Westvleteren to establish a Trappist monastery on the Scourmont plateau. This with their main task "to help the region around CHIMAY".
To accomplish this task, the monks decided to brew a beer, among other things.
The first Chimay beer was brewed in 1862. The first deliveries of the beer were made by the fathers themselves. They provided door to door delivery on foot. Today, the brewing and fermentation process takes place within the abbey. Filling takes place in Baileux, a village between the abbey and the town of Chimay.
