Brouwerij Het Ij
Musician Kasper Peterson founded Brouwerij 'T IJ in 1985 after he became acquainted with Belgian beer styles. As a member of the band “Door Mekaar”, he regularly performed in Belgium and became interested in the beer from the southern neighbors. Because specialty beer was not brewed very often in the Netherlands, he decided to do it himself.
He started brewing his beer in a squat but soon had to look for a larger location. He came across the vacant Municipal Bathhouse Funen. A building with an extensive water supply and drainage system and a steam generator, making it ideal for brewing. Adjacent windmill De Gooyer is not part of the building, but has served as the ultimate striking landmark since the beginning.
The IJ Bier was a huge success and the brewery on the Funenkade could no longer meet the demand. A second location opened in January 2013.
In 2015, Brouwerij ’t IJ and Duvel Moortgat enter into a partnership for support in areas such as brewing technology and distribution, as well as financial strength.
