Special beer/Abbeybeer
Monasteries with monks dressed in habits, imposing monasteries, vast estates and a range of crafts, such as cheese making and beer brewing, conjure up an intriguing image of the world of abbeys. Although the term 'abbey beer' refers to the origin of the beer, every brewer is in principle free to label his beer as abbey beer. These beers carry on the traditions once initiated by the mighty abbeys of the past, even if the abbeys themselves often no longer exist today. For this reason, abbey beers are usually no longer brewed at the location of the former abbey.
The 'Recognized Belgian Abbey Beer' quality mark guarantees that there is a historical connection between the beer and an existing or former brewery. We often find information about the beer in old writings, drawings or paintings, and even in the remains of old abbeys valuable traces of brewing activities can often be found.
