The story of the Piedboeuf brewery and Jupiler
The first Jupiler beer flows from the brewing installations in 1966. But the earliest roots go back much further. At the beginning of the 19th century, the Walloon Piedboeuf family began producing copper brewing kettles. Jean-Théodore Piedboeuf took things a step further and founded in 1853 his own brewery in his hometown of Jupille-sur-Meuse, a suburb of Liège. Their first beers were bottom-fermented.
In the early 20th century, Henri Piedboeuf and his brother-in-law Albert Van Damme gave the Piedboeuf brewery new momentum. After the First World War, they were inspired by popular German beer styles to develop a new brewing process. Following the example of their eastern neighbours, they named their beers after their place of brewing. Jupiler was born.
From Jupiler 5 to number 1
In 1959, the Piedboeuf brewery launched the blond beer Jupiler Urtyp. Its success paved the way for Jupiler 5, named after its alcohol percentage and its five ingredients. Thanks to its characteristically fresh finish and mild taste, Jupiler 5 quickly became popular when introduced in September 1966. So popular, in fact, that it continued life simply as “Jupiler”.
In the 1980s, Piedboeuf was forced to merge with the Artois brewery, producer of its major competitor Stella Artois, forming Interbrew (today the global giant AB InBev). This gave Jupiler the opportunity to conquer the Netherlands as well, where it sponsored the football league and became the fastest-growing pilsner for ten consecutive years.
In 2006, the bull in the logo received a redesign: it now charges on four legs instead of two. Today, Jupiler is Belgium’s undisputed number one beer and is still brewed by Piedboeuf in Jupille-sur-Meuse.
The 5 ingredients of Jupiler
- Water: the key ingredient containing the minerals that give Jupiler its distinctive flavour
- Barley malt: provides the starch that is converted into sugar and later fermented into alcohol
- Maize: adds the characteristic refreshing finish
- Hops: contribute flavour, aroma and freshness
- Yeast: the soul of the beer, responsible for producing alcohol and CO₂
Wide range of Jupiler beers at Belgian Beer Heaven
Jupiler is a favourite among Belgians and among Belgian Beer Heaven customers. You can buy this pils in our webshop in bottles, cans or kegs to enjoy freshly tapped beer at home. Don’t forget to order the matching beer glasses. You can also choose between several Jupiler varieties:
- Jupiler: formerly “5”, today officially “red”, but Belgians simply say “a Jupke” (Flanders) or “une Jup” (Wallonia). A pilsner with a mild, slightly bitter taste and 5.2% ABV.
- Jupiler Blue: introduced in 2006 with a reduced alcohol content of 3.3%, ideal when you want the taste of Jupiler without the accompanying alcohol.
- Jupiler 0.0%: launched in 2017 as the successor to Jupiler N.A.. Unlike the N.A., which contained 0.5% alcohol, the 0.0% is a true alcohol-free beer.
Jupiler Tauro was produced from 2008 to 2012 and had an alcohol content of 8.3%. It was replaced by Jupiler New Tauro (6.2%), which is also no longer produced.
