De Achelse Kluis

Beer has been brewed within the walls of the Achelse Kluis since 1850, originally under the watchful eye of Trappist monks. What started as a spiritual and artisanal project grew into a traditional beer with a name and fame. Today, the range includes Achel Blond, Achel Bruin, Achel Blond Extra and Achel Bruin Extra, available in 33cl and 75cl bottles.

The brewery has had an eventful history. During the First World War, in 1917, the brewing installation was dismantled by the German occupiers, which put an end to production. It wasn't until 1998 that brewing was revived, thanks to the collaboration and expertise of other Trappist abbeys such as Rochefort, Westmalle and Westvleteren.

In addition to the brewery, the Achelse Kluis also houses an abbey shop and a brasserie, where visitors can enjoy the serene atmosphere and a glass of authentic abbey beer.

A major turning point came in 2021, when the last two monks left the abbey. As a result, Achel no longer met the requirements of the International Trappist Logo (ATP), and the beer officially lost the right to call itself "Trappist" from 2023 onwards.

In the same year, the Tormans Group took over all activities of the Achelse Kluis, heralding a new chapter for this iconic Belgian beer heritage.
