Industrial breweries produce in enormous volumes and reduce costs through cheaper techniques and ingredients. For example, up to 40% of the barley can be replaced with corn, rice, or sugars. To make the final product resemble a pilsner, coloring or caramel is often added.

Real pilsner, on the other hand—like the traditional German or Czech style—is brewed with 100% barley malt. No expense is spared on aromatic hops, which provide that characteristic floral, spicy, and sometimes slightly bitter note. The result is a beer with depth, character, and freshness, just as pilsner was originally intended.
