Ab Inbev
A brief history of Interbrew and AB InBev
AB InBev was formed in part from Interbrew, which itself resulted from the 1988 merger between the Artois Brewery in Leuven (Flemish Brabant) and the Piedboeuf Brewery in Jupille (Liège province). In 2004, the Belgian Interbrew merged with the Brazilian AmBev to create InBev. Four years later, the group acquired Anheuser Busch, the largest brewery in the United States. Another four years on, AB InBev became the owner of Grupo Modelo, the largest brewery in Mexico.
In 2016, SAB Miller, then the world’s number two beer producer, followed. At that time, the new merged group was selling twice as much beer as number three Heineken and five times more than number four Carlsberg. Around 70% of this output is sold in North, Central and South America.
Wide range of AB InBev beers at Belgian Beer Heaven
Thanks to successive mergers and acquisitions, AB InBev owns an impressive portfolio of beer brands. Three of them clearly stand out:
- The Belgian pilsner Stella Artois is sold in more than 80 countries.
- American Budweiser is the most popular beer brand in the United States.
- The Mexican Corona Extra is brewed with maize as its main ingredient instead of barley.
Other brands enjoy worldwide success while appealing to a more specific audience, for example because they are dark beers or contain particular ingredients that give them a more distinctive character than mainstream brews.
- The Belgian abbey beers from Leffe have been brewed since 1952.
- Hoegaarden is best known for its wheat beers and fruit beers.
- Goose Island is a renowned brewpub and brewery in the city of Chicago.
- Franziskaner Weissbier is brewed at Löwenbräu in Munich.
- The pilsner Beck’s from Bremen is Germany’s most exported beer.
The local champions are deeply rooted in local traditions. Think of Bud Light in the US, or Dommelsch, Hertog Jan and Oranjeboom in the Netherlands. These are AB InBev’s Belgian champions:
- Piedboeuf is the brand name for several types of Belgian table beer.
- The typical Belgian pilsner Jupiler is brewed by Piedboeuf in Jupille-sur-Meuse.
- Belle Vue is famous throughout Belgium for its unique lambic beers.
- Tripel Karmeliet from Bosteels Brewery offers notes of banana, vanilla and orange.
