Since 2015, brewer Pauwel Raes has been marketing an exceptional Oude Kriek, made with more than 35% Schaarbeekse cherries—the most prized cherry variety for traditional lambic. The "Oude Kriek" designation is protected by the European Union, guaranteeing that this is an authentic product, made according to the traditional method without any additives that would affect the beer's purity.

In the glass, this Oude Kriek reveals a deep dark red to burgundy color, with a fine pink head that forms briefly and then quickly dissipates—an elegant visual characteristic of true, unsweetened kriek lambic.

The aroma is intensely fruity and immediately dominates with an abundance of cherries, not just any cherries. Beneath this lies a subtle vegetal character: notes of green leaves, young twigs, and woody foliage. The aroma develops further into deep almond and marzipan accents, originating from the cherry stones, which release their characteristic bittersweet aromas during maceration. A light touch of wood and a soft, refreshing hint of lemon form the background. Strikingly, classic lambic aromas, such as Brett-funk or pronounced wild fermentation notes, play virtually no role here—the fruit clearly takes center stage.

The taste experience begins with a particularly soft and mild acidity, much friendlier than with traditional lambics. A light, natural fruit sweetness supports the beginning of the sip, after which a relatively thin body is compensated by the concentrated cherry and almond flavors that reemerge. The beer is low in carbonation, with only a subtle kick, which further enhances the juiciness of the cherries.

Towards the finish, beautiful almond and wood notes develop, giving the finish structure and depth. The finish is dry, with a clear and lingering aftertaste of ripe cherries—a return that further underscores the authenticity of this Oude Kriek.
