Brouwerijen Alken-Maes
Today, Alken-Maes is the second largest brewery group in Belgium, with an impressive brand portfolio and a history dating back to the 19th century.
The company's origins lie in two separate breweries. In the village of Waarloos, Egied and Nicko Maes took over the Sint-Michaël Brewery around 1880. At about the same time, Arthur Boes founded a brewery in Alken, about a hundred kilometres away. Both breweries grew steadily and developed iconic Belgian beers.
A milestone was the year 1928, when Cristal was launched - the very first Belgian pilsner. Maes Pils followed in 1946 and also grew to be a permanent fixture. In the years that followed, the range expanded further with, among others, Grimbergen, Ciney and the fruity lambic beer Mort Subite.
In 1988, the two breweries officially came together under one name: Alken-Maes. Since then, the company has continued to strengthen its position in the Belgian beer world.
Today, Alken-Maes has a rich and diverse brand portfolio. The best-known include:
Pils beers: Maes Pils, Cristal Alken
Abbey beers: Affligem, Postel, Grimbergen
Lambic beers: Mort Subite
Strong beers: Judas, Hapkin
Regional and traditional beers: Op-Ale, Ciney, Watneys Scotch Ale
With respect for tradition and an open mind about innovation, Alken-Maes remains a permanent fixture in the Belgian beer landscape.
