Boon Oude Gueuze Vat 77 is a distinctive and characterful Oude Geuze, created through spontaneous fermentation and crafted from a careful blend of young and old lambic. What makes this release special is that no less than 90% of the lambic used comes from foeder 77 – an impressive oak barrel dating back to 1907. This historic barrel has been used continuously since 1986 to mature three-year-old lambic and is considered one of Frank Boon's absolute favorites.

This Oude Geuze clearly bears the hallmark of its origins. The nose immediately reveals the typical Boon profile: a light "putteke" (a subtle, cellar-like note), pronounced aromas of Brettanomyces, and a certain dark, somewhat earthy undertone. The whole is complex and authentic, with a rustic charm characteristic of traditionally matured lambic.

The taste of this beer deviates slightly from what one often expects from a gueuze. The acidity remains remarkably mild and controlled. Instead, a softer, slightly sweet note emerges. The wood of the old foeder is clearly present, with a somewhat musty, woody nuance, giving the beer a distinctly mature character. The finish is slightly sticky and lingers, contributing to the full, layered experience.

The lambic used for this gueuze was brewed on October 26th and 27th, 2011. After a lengthy maturation period, the beer was bottled on October 24th, 2013. From late 2014, it was distributed as a limited edition in matte green 37.5cl bottles. Due to its limited edition and the use of the iconic foeder 77, this edition became a special addition to Boon's range and a sought-after bottle for fans of traditional Oude Geuze.
