The wider the glass, the more freedom of movement the aromas have. On the other hand, the carbon dioxide disappears faster, while this is necessary for the formation of the head, which protects the beer from oxygen. A thinner glass gives a sharper flavour, a thicker glass a rounder taste. From a tall glass, the beer flows faster into your mouth, bringing more freshness and sharpness.
The general rule:
- Bottom-fermenting, light beers should be served in a narrow, tall and thin glass. This maintains the low serving temperature and freshness of these pleasant thirst-quenchers for longer.
- Top-fermenting, dark beers are served in a short, bulbous and thicker glass. This is better adapted to the higher serving temperature and releases the delicious aromas.
Of course, no one is stopping you from experimenting with beer glasses yourself. For example, try tasting the same beer in a sharp wine glass and a thick beer glass. Afterwards, don't forget to clean your glasses. A water filter on the inside prevents the head of foam from adhering well to the glass.
