Brouwerij Affligem - Alken Maes
Affligem's origins date back to the year 1074, when six knights laid down their swords and converted to monastic life in the village of Affligem. They founded a Benedictine abbey and lived according to the rules of St. Benedict, which focused on community spirit and sobriety.
At a time when water was often unsafe to drink, the monks decided to brew beer - not just for themselves, but especially for their guests. During Advent and Lent, stricter rules for personal consumption applied, which led them to temporarily brew a heavier beer: the tripel, a tradition that continues to this day.
The abbey has experienced turbulent periods over the centuries. The brewery was completely destroyed during the Second World War, but the monks did not give up their passion for brewing. In 1956, they entered into a partnership with the nearby brewery in Opwijk (later De Smedt brewery). The age-old recipe was adapted to modern brewing methods, without sacrificing quality and character.
In 1969, the De Smedt brothers, in consultation with the abbey, acquired the rights to the Affligem brand name. From 1970 onwards, the beer was officially brewed by the De Smedt brewery, with respect for the monastic tradition.
Although the brand was added to the Alken-Maes portfolio in 2010, and has been part of Heineken since 2013, the Affligem abbey itself remains the owner of the brand. In this way, the authentic recipes and unique character of Affligem are safeguarded.
Today, Affligem symbolises almost 1000 years of Belgian beer tradition – a rich history of faith, craftsmanship and perseverance, bottled in every bottle.
